This week’s been a busy one.
I was in Bradford on Monday, speaking at the Dalziel’s Masterclass. Great room, great butchers… and interestingly, the bit that really grabbed people wasn’t margins or marketing.
It was training your team in customer service.
Funny how often the “simple” things spark the biggest conversations.
Then we rolled straight into a busy Mother’s Day weekend in the shop, always a big one.
But the best moment of the week came from a call with a new member who’s just joined the Impact Retail Success Club.
They told me something that made me smile.
They’d been reading my content - emails and blog posts and decided to rethink their Mother’s Day promotion.
Normally, they’d do what a lot of retailers do…
10% off.
Maybe 15% if they were feeling brave.
Boring.
And it usually means giving money away that no one really notices.
Instead, they got creative.
Their offer was simple:
Spend £50 over Mother’s Day weekend and get a free bottle of Prosecco.
Here’s the clever bit.
They negotiated a strong deal on the Prosecco with their supplier, so the actual cost to them was less than a typical discount.
But the perceived value to the customer was far higher.
Customers loved it.
Sales were strong.
And the owner even grabbed a bottle themselves to toast the success. 🥂
That’s what happens when you mix thinking time with creative action.
I call it rhythmic activity.
And rhythmic activity leads to the rhythmic acquisition of customers.
The business is already on a brilliant growth trajectory - and now the owner has joined the Impact Retail Success Club AND signed up for the Impact Business Builder Day too.
Success always leaves clues.
And the biggest takeaway for you?
Growth is rarely random. It’s usually predictable.
So here’s a question for you:
What creative offer could you run this month that’s more exciting than a simple discount?
If today’s story got you thinking about your own offers and promotions, that’s exactly what we focus on at the Impact Business Builder Day.
It’s a full day stepping back from the counter to work on your business — generating ideas, planning promotions, and building a clearer growth plan.
There are only a few places left, and you can see the details here.
And if you like the idea of regularly swapping ideas with other ambitious butchers and farm shop owners, that’s exactly why I created the Impact Retail Success Club.
It’s a small group of retailers who meet each month to share ideas, solve challenges, and keep moving their businesses forward.
Have a great week.
