AI is brilliant. I'm a huge fan of it.
In fact, I use it every single day. It saves me time, helps me think more clearly and makes me more productive. If I'm honest, it probably makes me look more professional too.
But this week I noticed something.
I was scrolling through Facebook and saw post after post from independent butchers.
AI-generated image.
AI-generated image.
Another one.
Then another.
The problem wasn't that they were using AI. The problem was they all looked the same.
Ironically, the very businesses that rely on being different were making themselves look identical.
Now, before anyone points the finger...
I used an AI image myself recently.
It was the first time I'd used one that was so obviously AI-generated. It was unique to me, created specifically for my post, but even then it still looked... AI.
And that's the danger.
As independent retailers, your biggest advantage isn't your buying power or your marketing budget. It's your personality, your people, your shop and your story. Customers choose you because you're not the supermarket.
So don't throw that advantage away by filling your social media with images that could belong to anyone.
Use real photos.
Show your team.
Show your products.
Show the things that make your business unmistakably yours.
And if you do use AI to create images, put enough effort into them that they don't scream, "This was made by AI." That's where the real skill lies.
The same goes for writing.
AI can write emails, social posts, job adverts and product descriptions. It can help you solve problems, generate ideas and even challenge your thinking. But the results will only ever be as good as what you bring to the conversation.
AI isn't a replacement for your ideas.
It's an assistant.
A very good one.
But it's your creativity, your experience and your personality that give it direction. The more of yourself you bring to the conversation, the more unique the result becomes.
Don't use AI to make your business look like everyone else's.
Use it to help your business become even more of what makes it special.
That's a very different thing.
Inside the Impact Retail Success Club we've been exploring practical ways to use AI to save time without losing personality. If you'd like to learn how to make AI work for your business rather than making your business look like everybody else's, hit reply and let's have a chat about joining us.
Have a great week.
