My business mentor taught me that the worst thing you can do as a small business owner, is think like a small business owner.
That came up in a conversation with someone who attended the Impact Business Builder Day - he said he’d finally understood what my mentor meant by it.
Because we all do it.
We slip into protection mode.
Protect the cash.
Protect the team.
Protect what we’ve built.
Sounds sensible - but there’s a cost.
When you only make decisions from a “don’t lose what I’ve got” mindset, you usually end up with a smaller business, slower growth, and opportunities left sitting on the shelf.
The trick isn’t pretending risk doesn’t exist, common sense still matters.
The real skill is catching yourself thinking like a small business owner, then stepping out of it.
Stepping up.
Making the bigger, bolder decisions that actually move the business forward.
It’s amazing how many poor decisions can be traced back to one thing:
The owner thinking like a small business owner.
Something to think about
Have a great week.
