Great Questions

Why Better Questions Build Better Butchers’ Shops and Farm Shops

December 07, 20253 min read

Every so often, something happens inside Impact Retail Success Club that reminds me why I love working with ambitious butchers and farm shop owners.

This week, it was a message from a long-standing member.

I won’t name him, but I’ve watched his business grow for three years now. Proper growth too - not just turnover, but confidence, leadership, and calmness in the way he runs things.

He’s the sort who listens, asks sharp questions, and then actually goes away and takes action.

If there’s a formula for running a successful shop, that’s pretty much it.

A Question That Said Everything

He sent me a message ahead of this week’s Impact Club call.

A thoughtful, well-framed question that immediately told me he was stepping into the next phase of his journey.

Not “How do I get through next week?”

Not “What offer should I run?”

It was a question about systems, delegation, and long-term quality of life.

The kind of question that reveals someone is levelling up.

When I replied praising the quality of the question, he said something that stopped me in my tracks:

“2026 is going to be the year I really get my shit together - but I mean properly.”

Then he added:

“The business is flying, but I’m still the one that makes EVERYTHING happen. I need proper training in place and some delegation so the business works for me better.”

That right there is the moment every independent retailer eventually reaches.

The moment you stop thinking like the doer and start thinking like the owner.

Champions League Questions

I told him what I’ll tell you:

Your quality of life is defined by the quality of questions you ask.

Most retailers stay stuck asking survival questions:

How do I get through this week?

How do I plug this staffing gap?

How do I keep everyone happy?

But things really move when you start asking Champions League questions:

What needs to happen so this runs without me?

What would world-class look like in my shop?

What’s the bottleneck that’s really holding us back?

Better questions lead to better decisions.

Better decisions lead to a better business.

A better business leads to a better life.

Simple - not easy.

But absolutely transformational.

Why This Matters for Butchers and Farm Shops

Independent retail is full-on.

You’re juggling stock, staff, customers, margins, waste, marketing, and ten other things before 11am.

It’s no wonder most owners don’t get the headspace to ask bigger questions.

That’s why this member’s message meant so much.

He’d stepped back long enough to realise:

“I’m the bottleneck — and fixing it will unlock everything.”

That’s the breakthrough moment.

If You Want to Start Asking Better Questions…

This is exactly the work we do inside Impact Retail Success Club.

Every month a group of butchers and farm shop owners bring real challenges to the table, and together we pull them apart.

The questions get sharper.

The ideas get better.

And everyone leaves with clarity they didn’t have an hour earlier.

We’ve got room for a couple more around the virtual table.
