Here’s this week’s Impact Retail Tip of the Week - and it’s about something many independent retailers find surprisingly difficult.
Saying no.
It often shows up in small moments on the counter:
“Can you do that a bit cheaper?”
“Can you just do me a deal on this?”
“Can you make me something slightly different?”
And because we want to be helpful…
All too often, we say yes.
But over time, those small yeses start to add up.
Margins get squeezed.
Standards get stretched.
Consistency starts to slip.
And before long, you’re no longer running the business - the requests are.
Here’s the shift:
Every time you say yes to the wrong thing, you weaken your position.
Not because the request is unreasonable.
But because it pulls you away from what your business is designed to do well.
Strong retailers understand something important:
Boundaries build brands.
They’re clear on what they offer, how they price and what they will and won’t do.
And they communicate that calmly and confidently.
Not defensively.
Not awkwardly.
Just clearly.
Because the right customers respect it.
And the wrong customers were never the goal in the first place.
A quick win for this week: Notice where you’re saying yes out of habit rather than intention. Pick one situation where you can hold your ground.
Not aggressively.
Just clearly.
Because when you protect your standards, you protect your business.
Food for thought.
Have a great day,
Mark
