Retail Tip of the Week #25 - The 3-Foot Rule: A Simple Retail Habit That Can Improve Sales

May 05, 20261 min read

Here’s this week's Retail Tip of the Week, and this one is practical. It’s simple, costs nothing, and you can do it today.

Stand three feet back from your counter.

Not behind it, where you spend most of your day working. Stand in front of it, where your customers stand, and look at it properly.

Because the reality is, we spend so much time working in our businesses that we rarely stop to look at them. And what feels obvious to us often looks very different from the customer’s point of view.

From three feet away, your counter tells a story.

Does it look full, fresh and inviting?
Can customers quickly understand what’s for sale and what it costs?
Does anything stand out?

Or does it feel cluttered, cramped, or a little bit tired?

Sometimes the quickest wins in retail don’t come from adding more products or launching another offer. They come from improving what customers already see every day.

A clearer ticket.
A stronger focal point.
More space around your best products.

Less clutter.

More impact.

It’s amazing how often one small change in presentation can lift sales without changing the product itself. Better visibility creates better decisions, and better decisions often lead to better sales.

Because customers buy with their eyes first.

Before they ask.

Before they taste.

Before they decide.

So here’s your quick win for this week: take ten minutes, stand three feet back, and look at your counter properly.

Then change one thing.

Not five.

One.

Because in retail, what customers see first often shapes what they buy.

Food for thought this week.

Have a great day,

Mark
