The Wall I Didn't See

The Wall You Didn’t See Coming

May 10, 20262 min read

This week, I did something I’ve never done before - I crashed my car into a wall.

Not a dramatic crash.

Just me, in a car park, managing to smash a rear light because I misjudged the space.

Daft? Absolutely.

The ridiculous bit is this: I’ve got cameras, parking sensors and emergency braking. A small army of technology designed to stop exactly this sort of thing.

And I still did it.

Why?

Because I was so focused on the concrete post on one side of the car (which I’d spotted at the last second) that I completely ignored the big wall on the other side - the one I thought I had miles of room from.

And that’s business, isn’t it?

Things tick along nicely.

Sales are steady.

The team are cracking on.

Then something grabs your attention.

A staffing issue.

A supplier problem.

A new idea.

A bright shiny new object.

And while you’re staring at that one thing, something else, the thing you thought was fine, clips you from the side.

Margins slip.

Waste creeps up.

Standards wobble.

Customers notice.

Running a shop is a bit like reversing in a tight space.

There’s always something you need to be watching.

And even if you’ve got safeguards in place - systems, reports, good people - if you’re not looking in the right places, trouble can still sneak up and bite.

So, here’s the question for this week:

Where are you being blindsided right now?

What are you so focused on that you might be missing the wall beside you?

Because once something gets momentum, whether it’s a problem or a bad habit, even the best emergency brakes won’t stop the bump.

Something to think about.

And, if that question’s hit home, that’s exactly the sort of thing we dig into inside Impact Retail Success Club - spotting problems early, fixing them fast, and learning from other retailers who’ve been there before.
