On Friday, I was at the North East Wholesale Fruit & Vegetable Market, picking up our fresh produce.
On the salad pitch, something caught my eye.
A huge ‘flash’ of boxed salad produce, beautifully displayed.
It looked incredible.
Years ago, this was the norm.
Every pitch would carefully ‘flash’ their fresh produce to showcase quality.
These days?
You rarely see it.
It looked so good, I took a picture.
I mentioned it to my salesperson.
“I did that,” he said.
He’d come in at 1.00 am and spent 45 minutes carefully stacking and presenting it.
And they’d had a busy morning because of it.
That’s the power of great merchandising.
It’s no different in your shop.
The right mix of products is crucial, but how you present them is what makes people stop, look… and buy.
The salesperson told me he was “old school.”
But I think there’s a lot to be said for that.
Yes, you have to move with the times.
But some traditional values - like great merchandising- should never be lost.
It still works.
It still matters.
And, done well, it still sells.
You need to give your products the best chance to shine.
Something to think about, perhaps.
Have a great week.
