Positioning

Tip of the Week #16 – You’re Always Positioning (Whether You Mean To Or Not)

March 04, 20261 min read

Here’s this weeks Retail Tip of the Week, and it builds directly on last week’s message about confidence and pricing.

Because pricing doesn’t sit on its own.

It sits inside positioning.

And here’s the important truth:

You are always positioning your business.

Even when you’re not trying to.

Your uniforms position you.
Your window display positions you.
Your social media positions you.
Your cleanliness positions you.
Your product tickets position you.
Your tone of voice on the counter positions you.

Everything speaks.

The question is, does it all say the same thing?

Many independent retailers tell me they want to be known for quality.

But then:

  • Handwritten tickets are scruffy

  • Team members look unsure

  • Displays are half full

  • Music is random

  • There’s clutter on the counter

None of those things are dramatic.

But collectively?

They quietly drag the position down.

Here’s the shift:

If you don’t intentionally choose your position, the market will choose it for you.

And the market is quick to put people in the “average”, “cheap” or “just like everywhere else” box.

Premium isn’t just about price.

It’s about congruence.

It’s when everything, from your apron to your attitude, tells the same story.

A quick win for this week:

Walk into your own shop as if you’ve never been there before.

Stand at the door.

Look around.

Ask yourself:

“What does this place say about us?”

Not what youintendit to say.

What does it actually say?

Small adjustments create powerful shifts in perception.

And perception drives profit.

Food for thought.

Have a great day,

Mark
