Hi,
Here's a challenge for you this week.
Imagine you've just been asked to spend an hour helping another independent retailer improve their business.
You arrive at the shop, walk through the front door and slowly make your way around. Within minutes, you'd probably have a notebook full of ideas because you're looking at the business with fresh eyes.
That display could be stronger.
That sign needs replacing.
Those shelves feel a little empty.
I'd move those products together.
The queue could work harder.
You'd spot opportunities almost instantly.
Now here's the interesting question...
What if that shop was yours?
Would you notice the same things?
Or have you simply stopped seeing them?
The longer we own a business, the more familiar it becomes. We stop noticing the little things because they're there every single day, yet they're often the first things a customer notices when they walk through the door.
Familiarity can be your biggest blind spot.
This week's challenge is simple.
Walk around your own shop...
But pretend you're a consultant who's been invited in for the first time.
Don't think like the owner.
Think like the expert.
Take your time.
Stand still.
Look carefully.
Ask yourself what you'd praise, what you'd question and what you'd change if someone were paying you to improve this business. I suspect your list would grow surprisingly quickly.
Write down five improvements.
Then don't put the notebook back in the drawer.
Pick one.
Do it.
The reality is that you probably already know exactly what your business needs next. You don't need another course or another book to spot the opportunities.
You simply need to see your own business through different eyes.
Food for thought this week.
Have a great day,
Mark
